How to calculate GPA
GPA is a credit-weighted average of grade points. Convert each letter to points on your school's scale, multiply by the course's credits to get quality points, add the quality points together, and divide by the credits attempted. A 1-credit lab moves the number a quarter as much as a 4-credit lecture.

Cumulative GPA calculator
Your cumulative GPA is the same formula run over every credit you have attempted. Enter the GPA and credit count from your transcript in the optional section and the calculator combines them with this semester's rows. With a 3.40 over 45 prior credits, the 3.57 term above lifts the cumulative to about 3.43, because 45 credits of history outweigh 11 new ones. This is also the easiest way to answer "what do I need this semester to reach a 3.5": raise the rows until the cumulative number moves.

How is GPA calculated?
Each course earns quality points equal to its credits times the grade points for the letter (an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0). Add the quality points across every course and divide by the total credits attempted. A 4-credit B+ and a 3-credit A is (4 × 3.3 + 3 × 4.0) ÷ 7 ≈ 3.60.
What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA uses only the courses from one term. Cumulative GPA divides all quality points you have ever earned by all credits attempted, so each new semester moves it less as your credit total grows.
How do plus and minus grades count?
Most US colleges add or subtract 0.3: A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B- is 2.7. An A+ is usually still 4.0, though a few schools award 4.3. Check your registrar page; this calculator uses the common 0.3 steps with A+ at 4.0.
Do pass/fail courses affect GPA?
A passing P or S grade normally earns credit but no grade points, so it is left out of the GPA entirely. A failing grade in a pass/fail course is often counted as an F. Pick the pass option here to exclude a course from the average while still counting its credits toward your total.
Do withdrawals or repeated courses count?
A W usually does not affect GPA. Repeat policies vary: some schools replace the earlier grade, others average both attempts. This calculator averages whatever rows you enter, so follow your school's policy when deciding what to include.
