How weighted grades work
A weighted course groups assignments into categories such as homework, quizzes, and exams, and gives each category a share of the final grade. Your score inside a category is points earned divided by points possible. The course grade is each category score times its weight, summed.
The divisor matters. While the course is in progress, only the categories with graded work are in it, so your grade is out of the weight graded so far. That is why a strong start can look better than the final result: a heavily weighted final exam has not been counted yet.
A worked example
Homework 20% at 92, quizzes 20% at 85, midterm 25% at 78, and a final worth 35% that has not happened. Graded weight is 65%, so the current grade is (92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 25) ÷ 65 ≈ 84.5%. Once the final is graded, the divisor becomes 100 and the final alone moves the grade by up to 35 points.

How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each category score by its weight, add those products together, and divide by the sum of the weights you used. With weights of 40% and 60% and scores of 90% and 80%, that is (90 × 40 + 80 × 60) ÷ 100 = 84%.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
The calculator divides by the total weight you entered, so each category counts as its share of that total. Check your syllabus if the total is off; a missing category is the usual cause.
What happens to categories with nothing graded yet?
Leave the score blank and the category is skipped. Your grade is then out of the weight graded so far, which is how Canvas shows your current grade by default.
How do I get a category score from individual assignments?
Add the points you earned across the category and divide by the total points possible, not the average of the percentages. A 10-point quiz and a 100-point exam in the same category are weighted by points.
Is a weighted grade the same as a points-based grade?
No. In a points-based course every assignment counts by its point value and there are no category weights. Use this calculator only when your syllabus lists category percentages.
