Is there a Canvas desktop app?
Short answer: not an official one. Instructure ships Canvas Student for iOS and Android and expects laptop users to open the website. If you want Canvas as an app on a Mac or Windows PC, you have three real options, covered below.
Store listings that use the Canvas name for desktop are third-party. Only sign in through software whose publisher you can identify.

- Full features, no install. One tab per course, sign in again whenever your school logs you out, no cross-course calendar without extra clicks.
- 2. Canvas Student mobile app
- Great for notifications and quick checks. Not built for writing essays, and it does not run on Windows or most Macs.
- 3. Assignly desktop app
- A native macOS and Windows client. Connects with your school login, shows every course on one calendar, tracks grades, and drafts eligible assignments you review and submit from the app.

Canvas on a Mac
Safari, Chrome, and Firefox all run Canvas fully. The gaps are habit-level: nothing lives in your Dock, notifications depend on email, and the dashboard shows only what each course's settings surface. Some Apple silicon Macs can install iPhone apps from the Mac App Store, but Canvas Student is a phone layout and is not always offered there.
Canvas on Windows
Same story: the browser is the official path. Edge can "install" the Canvas site as a progressive web app, which gives you a window and a taskbar icon but nothing the site does not already do. Microsoft Store results for "Canvas" are third-party shells; treat any sign-in prompt inside them with care.
What a real desktop client adds
- One sign-in that stays connected. You log in through your school's normal login page once; the app stays connected and tells you clearly if it needs you to sign in again.
- Every course on one calendar. Due dates, overdue work, and a seven-day view that Canvas spreads across course pages.

- Canvas itself, embedded. Anything the app does not cover opens in a built-in Canvas view, so you never lose a feature by switching.
Canvas desktop questions
Is there an official Canvas desktop app?
No. Instructure publishes Canvas Student and Canvas Teacher for iOS and Android, and the full Canvas experience for computers is the website in a browser. There is no official download for Mac or Windows.
Can I run Canvas Student on a Mac?
Only on Apple silicon Macs that allow iPhone and iPad apps from the Mac App Store, and only if the app is made available there. Even then it is the phone layout in a window, not a desktop client.
Is there a Canvas app for Windows?
Not from Instructure. Apps in the Microsoft Store using the Canvas name are third-party wrappers around the website. Check who publishes an app before signing in through it.
What does Assignly add over the Canvas website?
