How Canvas weights assignment groups
Instructors put assignments into groups and can assign each group a percentage of the final grade. Inside a group, Canvas adds the points you earned and divides by the points possible, so a 100-point exam outweighs a 10-point quiz in the same group. Each group percentage is then multiplied by its weight and the results are added.
total = Σ (group % × weight) ÷ Σ weight of graded groups
A group with a weight but no graded work yet is left out and the remaining weights are rescaled. If group weights add up to more than 100%, Canvas does not scale them down, which is how extra-credit groups push a total above 100%.
Group rules also change the math. An instructor can drop the lowest one or more scores in a group or never drop a specific assignment. Dropped scores are removed from both the earned and the possible totals before the group percentage is computed.
"Only graded assignments" explained
The Grades page has a checkbox labeled "Calculate based only on graded assignments," checked by default. With it on, anything without a score, whether not yet submitted or not yet graded, is ignored. Your total is your performance on the work that has actually been scored.
Turn it off and every ungraded assignment is counted as a zero. Early in a semester that number looks alarming, but it answers a real question: this is your grade if you submit nothing else. Late in a semester it is close to your final grade with only the unfinished work missing.
What-if grades
Click any score on the Grades page and type a hypothetical value; Canvas recalculates your total immediately and reverts when you reload. It is useful for one assignment at a time. For several remaining assignments and a target grade, use the final grade calculator or Grade Rescue inside Assignly, which solves for the scores you need rather than making you guess.

How does Canvas calculate my grade?
If your instructor weights assignment groups, Canvas scores each group as points earned over points possible, multiplies by the group weight, and adds the groups together. If groups are not weighted, Canvas adds all points earned and divides by all points possible.
What does "Calculate based only on graded assignments" do?
It is on by default on the Canvas Grades page. Ungraded and unsubmitted assignments are left out, so your grade reflects only what has been scored. Turn it off and every ungraded assignment counts as zero, which shows the grade you would have if you stopped submitting today.
Why is my Canvas grade different from what I calculated?
The usual causes are dropped lowest scores in a group, extra credit, an assignment marked as excused, a group with a weight but no graded work yet, or a score that was entered but not yet posted. Check the group rules in the Grades page.
What are Canvas what-if grades?
On the Grades page you can click any score and type a hypothetical value. Canvas recalculates your total with that number and saves the what-if score to your own view until you revert it. It is a quick way to test one assignment at a time.
Can Canvas tell me what I need on the final?
Not directly. You can enter a what-if score on the final and adjust it by hand until the total matches your target, or use the final grade calculator on this site.
Does Assignly use my real Canvas grades?
Yes. The desktop app connects with your school login and reads your assignment groups, weights, and scores, then labels every projection as an estimate. This page, by contrast, only uses what you type.
